Gallery - Oyster Restoration
2010

In 2010, the St. Mary’s River (SMR) became an oyster sanctuary encompassing 1,302 of the total 9,024 acres in the river. Historic oyster habitat in the St. Mary’s River, where watermen have harvested oysters, accounts for 2,461 acres, while only 1,058 acres are now identified as oyster habitat. During the 2010 fiscal year, the St. Mary's River Watershed has planted oysters into the SMR as part of the Department of Natural Resources Marylander's Grow Oysters program and with support from the Boeing Company.
